Sabah's longest river flows 330 miles eastwards from the mountains of central Borneo, into the Sulu Sea. The lower Kinabatangan River cruise can provide great sightings of wildlife. The most famous creature is the male proboscis monkey, sporting a pendulous nose, fat belly and thick white tail. Other fascinating creatures include the orang utan, elephants, clouded leopards, crocodiles, civet cats and otters. Kingfishers, macaques, hornbills, egrets and other species of birds can also be observed.
Between the road to the village of Sukau and the River lie the Gomantong Caves, home to millions of bats and swiftlets, whose nests are much prized by the Chinese for birds-nest soup.
