Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo<Previous Page
The capital of Sabah since the end of World War II, when the old town of Jesselton was rebuilt, KK has become a relaxed, sprawling township with an interesting blend of European, Malay and Chinese culture.
Town and Landscape - With old Chinese shophouses, traditional market places, several high-rise buildings, and new shopping areas, Kota Kinabalu has beautiful views of perpetual blue skies, lovely sunsets and a coral studded sea with misty mountains in the distance. Among the many interesting sites to visit here are the State Mosque, State Museum, the Sabah Foundation Building, and the Central Market.
Beach - Tuaran, a small pleasant village, is a half-hour's drive from Kota Kinabalu, and has lovely beaches. There is a bustling village market (tamu) and an agricultural station. The Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort has a good beach, a pool and nature walks to see re-located orang-utans, and there is a championship golf course.
