| This huge area of forest and limestone was originally established to protect the vast and valuable cave system, which includes the Great Caves, Painted Cave, and the Trader's Cave. The Niah Caves system was declared a National Historic Monument in 1958, and preserved as an archaeological heritage. The Caves were once home to stone age people, and artefacts and cave drawings found there showed that these people had their own unique culture and beliefs. The area is also famous for the edible birds' nests found high up in the caves. |
